ST2 or OM636 for a 57 footer ?

W+T

Featured Posts

I have two engines here. one being a Lister ST2 and the other a Merc OM636.

In good running order which would be good/best/more suitable for a 57 foot NB ?

And why ?

:)

OM636 has more power, better for charging batteries. expensive for parts, not renown for life, water cooled, needs skin tanks or fresh water cooling. Foreign

ST2 gutsy old engine, air cooled, needs side air vents but no freezing up, alternator runs slow on cam pulley. Hellish noisy. Almost unbreakable.  British.

Both well capable of running a 57' boat, ST2 will need the right prop for rivers though.

Could a second alternator be fitted though ?

That's not the problem. The belt drive is off the camshaft I think on ST2, certainly was on the SR2 before it. That means it runs at half engine revs and it is tricky fitting a big enough pulley on the engine and/or too small a pulley on the alternator to get enough revs on the alternator at canal speeds.

I have a genset with an ST2 running at 1500 RPM  and have hired boats with ST3s years ago... Noisy and the former is basic, though solid. Tend to be a bit oily - suitable for the likes of Fred Dibnah (no disrespec').

I think - not without good cause, that a second alternator or even a good first alternator will be a challenge to get it rotationg  at a reasonable speed to generate more than a little pwer to charge any reasonable batteries - for today's 'needs' On a plus side mine is aeons old but still starts and runs.

I know nowt about the OM636, but for any boat on the canals the key is serviceability - and if a thrupple nut breks while you're out in a canal in the wilds of nowhere - how are you going to get it fixed?

A solution / salvation may lie in a series of pulleys cobbled together to get a modern alternator to turnover fast..

Add: wot Tracy said more simply.  Sorry.

I have a something like 12 inch pulley on an ST3 to drive the alternator.

Yep, needs to be but many installations can't get the space for that. We had problems with BWs work boats getting big pulleys in.

well undecided lol.

And now i maybe having to stick with the boat being 45 foot. so either way they will be fine. It has the ST2 already fitted.

i rather have the power though and better and easier charging

The last Merc OM636 I had anything to do with was in a Les Allen up for sale. It was running OK, had given little trouble. The boat sold and the new owner put a can of black muck Molyslop in it.

In short order it packed up and had to be replaced.

This engine has been in the cruiser i have since new, the original engine. i believe.   and runs spot on. And to think of it i would only put diesel in it lol . When i bought the cruiser the engine came in everybody, not one person, said anything bad about them,  Parts are not to bad to come by and prices not horrendous, i use Westfield x4 , reason i still have it and was going  to put it back in the cruiser i have.,

As you know the Merc I would say that for today's boating there is no contest. Use the Merc.
