Apparently some Europeans do not like the word, however, it is my understanding that Indonesians use the word Bule simply to describe a white person, but not in the same derogatory manner as some words used by white people to describe black people.

They do indeed. It's widely used, an everyday word, but officials tend not to use it. You'll also hear 'bule gila' (crazy white person) regularly. Nothing like a bit of stereotyping eh :). It's a racist term no doubt but given that Indonesians tend to hold white people in high regard, generally, it's perhaps more of a complimentary term rather than a derogatory one.
