Evening all,

we’re soon to embark on our first cruise as boat owners want to be sure we have everything we need for the trip. The boat has I’m told a full kit, but what do I need in the way of keys etc? I know waterways key and handcuff key are essential, is there anything else we’re likely to need? We’re planning on using the North Oxford/Trent and Mersey/Bridgewater and Leeds Liverpool. Thanking you as always!

Depends on what "cruising kit" comes with the bost.

You will need:

Windlasses

Mooring pins and lump hammer,

Piling hooks and/or goat chains,

Fenders,

Mooring lines,

Centre line,

Hosepipe etc.

Thank you, not sure what they class a full cruising kit, but I’ve asked for an inventory, and there’s chandlery on the pickup marina, I was more concerned about anything I need to buy from CRT, are those two keys all that’s required from them?

You'll want at least one spare of each, but there might be some on the boat.  Dropping your only key usually happens in the middle of nowhere as the storm blows in ...

If the handcuff keys are the black ones be aware they don't fit all the handcuff locks as they are slightly the wrong shape.

Yes just the two keys.
but do take spares

spare hand cuff keys are great if you have crew, otherwise you’re chucking a key back and forth if you’ve only one

Wasn’t there a similar Post last month with lots of replies on the same subject, with one member suggesting a new Post dedicated to the subject so all could view without Newbies repeatedly posting the same question.

Not one that I saw, but I must admit I didn’t look through all posts, so I’m grateful all replies.

As I say I’m sure the same question has been asked recently I don’t know if it was in this section or the Equipment one, but it had lots of replies.

That's a really good list. The only thing I would add is towels, lots of old towels, called boat towels, ideally dyed a specific colour to separate them from human towels. Used for all sorts of spillages, plumbing leaks, and water ingress accidents, but most of all used to keep items 39 clean and dry.

This should be enough to get you started. You are bound to find something missing when you start, but boat stuff can be bought from boatyards along the way, and 'domestic' stuff can be picked up in supermarkets anyway.

Ideally when you set off make sure you have a full tank of diesel, at least one full spare gas bottle, a full tank of water and empty toilet (whether pump out or cassette). Then you won't need to worry about running out/emptying for a while.

I assume you will have the appropriate guidebooks and/or maps of your chosen route.

Midge repellent and sun cream.

Leeds and Liverpool is low on water supply from reservoirs and currently closed locks between Wigan and Bingley, apart from a short window for people needing to move. They say they are preserving water for peak cruising time in July and August but worth keeping an eye on the updates.

Not sure I’ll have time to collect all the list, but I’ll do my best and pick up the rest en route!

Was given some Nicholson guides from about 30yrs ago, but I guess they’ve moved on some since then? So I’d better buy new I guess.

A strong net [dive shop] on a pole to retrieve things dropped in from welldeck, ocurs frequently at first.

A gas spanner, and strong hands to tighten it,  plus gas detecting spray.

A wide selection of screwdrivers.

Medicinal brandy plus lots of handwashing things. Paper towels, antiseptic spray for scratches/cuts

Kitty litter in nylon stockings for spills in bilge etc.
