How to get a free boat.

Interesting comments.

I do wonder where they get the figure of £50,000 from.  It looks like a bare (damaged) hull with no engine or superstructure.  Not sure it is worth 50,000p;  not surprised no one else has tried to claim it.

I was thinking the same. Not sure where the £50k figure has come from

From the pricelist?  At 25ft it's a POCA 770, either OPEN or FREE model.

A bare hull OPEN 770 starts at 245,000 Danish krone (£30,000 ish).  A bare Hull FREE 770 starts at 289,000 (£34,500 ish).

Poca boats presumably know which boat they lost en route to a customer and the invoice value claimed off the insurance.

Of all the people on this forum who could understand that 25 feet of GRP can cost tens of thousands,  I thought you would be the top of the list!

It fell off a ship and washed up on a beach upside down  months later......... that might detract more than a little from its value.

Clearly the salvage cost for the remains of the boat  in this case if charged at a  commercial rate would have exceeded its value. The lady did the insurance company a favour by taking it off their hands .

It may have been £50k when new but it certainly wasn't £50k when it washed up on that island with a split in the hull!

It was scrap value at most which wont be a lot for a grp hull with a split in it and no engine covered in growth.

It sounds a great story and these are pretty chunky boats. It was off to Greenland when it fell off,. Sure she knows it ain't £50k but she's a shepherd, sails the islands , found it, reported it, been in contact with the company, can salvage it and has even got the light/nav frame donated by them. Best bit about it is the bit where the capacity is stated at 3 tons so she reckons it will take a few ewes. Certainly, the right way up and cleaned up, it doesn't look too bad at all for a freebie. Great story all round, she gets a decent boat, the insurance co don't have a wreck removal in a remote and expensive location, manufacturer get credit for their bit.

It will certainly cost here to get it sea worthy and up and running.

No such thing as a free boat!

She is a shepherdess and keeps her sheep on an island and she reckons that the boat will be useful for getting them on and off the island so although not free, it was certainly a lot cheaper than getting a suitable boat for her purpose where she lives.

How do you know the engine was covered in growth if it wasn't there??
