Advice on this boat as a first boat purchase?

Don't worry. Just as there are those tradeplater people who deliver cars by road, there are professional boat-movers on the canals. At least two of them are members of this forum. If you buy from a broker, they'll probably know someone who can do the job. It will almost certainly be cheaper than transport via lorry.

   Of course they can't go through stoppages, but you'll just have to wait until the stoppages stop being stoppages.

No problem at all there are a number of very good boat removal companies. 

I used one last year for our Cruiser.

 

Alternatively you can employ a 'boat mover' who will take your boat 'home' for you on water.

 

Costs will be similar (depending on distance) because a truck can cover most of the country in a day, whilst a boat mover could take a couple of weeks to do it 'on water'.

You may save the Lift out / lift in charges travelling by water, but the extra 'labour cost' for the extra days may counteract the savings, but you will also have the boat fuel costs to pay (£15+ per day)

 

Budget for £1000 + lift out and lift in costs and you should have some change.

 

I moved ours to North Wales but due to its size (beam and height) it needed a second escort vehicle , 2nd driver and Police permission to travel. It had to be a very special hydraulic bed low loader lowered to only 4" to give clearance under the bridges. (cost £2300 + lift out / in costs)

 

You wouldn't have these problems with a NB

It may be helpful in your boat search to list all the things you want from a boat,this is mine.

I am a not a live aboard but a weekender with a couple of three or four weeks away a year,but have frequent day trips,and always on my own.

The boat needs to be 30- 35ft, trad or small cruiser stern,no more than 20 years old. It must have a decent amount of tumblehome and not look like a box,and have decent paintwork.It must have tubular roof rails that you can get hold of properly and not ledges.The cabin roof must be strong enough to walk on without "oil canning".

A hull survey should show plenty of meat left on the hull.

The engine should be a modern Japanese marinisation (preferably Kubota) and have skin tank cooling at the proper size (1sq ft per 4hp) Last boat had direct canal water circulating through the water jacket,and I don't want that again.

A cratch cover I think is important for storage.

The galley/eating area should be at the back,a solid fuel stove should be midships,and a cassette toilet and shower.No pumpout!

Living/sleeping area at the front with a permanent fore and aft bed.Last boat had a crossways bed aft that had to be made up every night and it was a pain.

Must have a gas hob and grill to make my morning toast,and hot water from a instant gas water heater,no fancy plumbing or calorifier and also no fancy electrics,inverter etc.Shore hook up and battery charger is quite enough.

That's my wish list for my next boat,and of course everyone will have different requirements,but I hope to find the boat I have described sometime.

I have a feeling it was a thread by a bloke who had "done houses" fitting out a "cheap boat" for his daughter to live on at university, even though she didn't want to(!) but I might be mistaking it for another one.

Its had a name change from Constance, in the Duck add it says a full refit and insulation.

I didnt see this befor it was built in 86 taken from crt website 

When we purchased the boat we had a prof boat builder do a fit out 

Then if some remember we had engine problems so we put a recon engine and gearbox in so it's a  2 1/4 landrover marinised engine 

We have over 30k in receipts 

Who ever buys this boat will realise what works been done 

When purchased it was striped rebuilt repainted and spotwelded to sort any pitting all electrics and insulation new 

So to original question we think it's a great boat
