Evening alll hope ye are all keeping safe .I will be fitting hydraulic steering on my boat shortly and was wondering is it necessary to fit a small oil header tank .It's a vetus hydraulic  steering pump and it does have 3 connections on it .

Yes.

The 'header tank' should be incorporated as a reservoir behind the wheel. (It is on mine)

Are you installing a single or dual helm position ?

I have the Vetus manual if you need it (send me a PM with your email)

If it is a simple system, i.e. one steering position and one hydraulic ram shoving a single rudder then almost certainly not. Ah, edited due to Alans reply to say that on my boat it works fine, there is plenty of oil in the pump.
