Hydraulic steering

Evening alll hope ye are all keeping safe .I will be fitting hydraulic steering on my boat shortly and was wondering is it necessary to fit a small oil header tank .It's a vetus hydraulic  steering pump and it does have 3 connections on it .

Yes.

The 'header tank' should be incorporated as a reservoir behind the wheel. (It is on mine)

 

 

Are you installing a single or dual helm position ?

 

I have the Vetus manual if you need it (send me a PM with your email)

If it is a simple system, i.e. one steering position and one hydraulic ram shoving a single rudder then almost certainly not. Ah, edited due to Alans reply to say that on my boat it works fine, there is plenty of oil in the pump.

Thanks for your reply guys it is a simple system with one steering  position pushing one rudder with a distance of about 4 metres

Mine is similar, no need for a separate tank, from memory I believe they supply 2 caps, one vented, one not, make sure to fit the right one, instructions should be downloadable from Vetus if you dont have
