Not sure of the day/date, so perhaps I shouldn't have used this photo.

After I bought the Arthur, we did a tour of northern waterways in 1971 and moored under one of those shutes, in order to scrape out what particles we could find of coal wedged in its crevices. From the bucketful we gathered we fed the stove with it that evening  - and soon had to flee the bow cabin so intense was the heat thatr esulted. A nuclear meltdown could hardly have produced more energy. We were lucky the stove did not melt. Strong stuff, that Yorkshire coal. Is there any such still around?

On the Voges canal 2007. Shows how we worked through locks. One rope forward as a spring, rudder over a bit and in gear to keep against the wall. This canal is a mixture of Automatic and manual locks and I always worked the lock gate on our side to speed up operation else the eclusier had 80 plus meters to walk round the lock.

Normanton on Soar church from the river. On a good day it always looks great.

The 1860 bridge Mountsorrel. Built to carry a branch railway from the quarries to the railhead at Barrow on Soar. It now carries a conveyor belt which takes road stone from the quarry to the railhead. I always like this bridge with its graceful curve.

Today 2006 following this loaded peniche on the Voges canal. Lots of locks so couldn’t pass but he did let us pass the next day. Although slow they travel for at least 12 hours a day so still cover some distance

Excellent. I wonder if Safari is still plying for trade now.

I have asked on a French site and the boat is still working. Don’t think it’s the same couple as owned it when we meet them
