Interestingly, Bradshaw's doesn't refer to 'Old Turn' or 'Deep Cuttings' junctions. It simply lists:

  • Worcester Bar, junction with Worcester and Birmingham Canal - 1 furlong (from Paradise Street)
  • Farmer's Bridge, junction with Birmingham and Fazeley XCanal - 4 furlongs
  • Junction with Oozells Street Branch - 7 furlongs
  • Eastern junction with Icknield Port Road Wharf Loop Line - 1 mile 0 furlongs

The third junction is clearly the eastern end of the Oozells Street loop, and Farmer's Bridge is treated as a single, presumably 4-arm, junction

So did Bradshaw measure all these distances of did he rely on what someone else told him.

The Sun in the Eye

Crail, Fife, Scotland. Photo by ©AleksScholz  through Geograph  who wrote "During the winter months, the setting Sun moves behind the 'face' of the Caiplie Caves, and if you pick the right moment, and the right positioning, the Sun shines straight through the 'eye' of the face. We [photographer and dog] are both mesmerized"  This is my crop from the original posting, with a horizontal horizon ...

Bradshaw was the publisher. But I think author Henry Rodolph de Salis took the information from the various canal company records. They needed the distances for toll purposes.

IMG_20221115_131253208.jpg.9c1db50bf038e5064bb777ccf961dcde.jpgYes, it's a complicated history hereabouts, so heading for the bookshelf gives this brief summary:

From RHDavies The Birmingham Canal Navigations Through Time (2010 ISBN 978 1 4456 0225 7) this is Hanson's survey map of 1778 showing the two termini of the Birmingham-Wolverhampton Canal at Friday Bridge in the north (later shortened after becoming the Newhall Branch at Farmer's Bridge Junction at the top of Farmers Bridge Locks) and Paradise Street in the south (later filled in beyond Gas Street Basin). The junction of these two branches is the T with the straight-on being (now) from the Oozells Street Loop towards Farmer's Bridge Junction.  ...

IMG_20221115_112607898.jpg.f050fee7e741a4bcf78d253fd00bdc08.jpg... and then Telford's improvements in the 1820s showing the connection of the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and the New Main Line creating the Oozells Street Loop.

There was always the one junction as above and, perhaps, a second one close by with the New Main Line. The plethora of bright blue signs to tell us the names of bridges and other features, all arrived later ... 🙂IMG_20221115_112902229.jpg.8514e64b15b7f3ed9ad631b3e2ced072.jpg

From Ray Shill's Birmingham's Canals (1999 ISBN 0-7509-2077-7) this is a photo, from Birmingham Reference Library, of the circular island added during the Second World War for fear of bombing breaching the canal into a railway tunnel underneath. The island has been subsequently remodelled.

IMG_20221115_112530001.jpg.768ccbabbf1bca6b76651a48d46d0064.jpgYes, Bradshaw's (1904) and Edwards (1950, 1962, 1972 editiions) all quote the Oozells Street Branch as a two-furlong branch leaving the New Main Line at Ladywood Junction, itself three furlongs west from the junction that they all call Farmer's Bridge. Maybe there was no practical navigational access at the crossroads ??

There was a message-board discussion with NickAtty of Canalplan, in about 2004 (??) in whick Nick, who then did all the updates to the database himself, said he tried to prioritise historical accuracy in the naming of canals and features. Since then, Canalplan has become more of a wiki, with users able to add names and features (with moderation). This was initially related to Googlemaps for the exact geographical location of features, and when the nice MrGoogle (2018) increased the monetisation of the features beyond their value to Canalplan, the maps are now via OpenMap. Hence or Otherwise, as they say, the distances on the maps and on the database are not wholly consistent (at the very detailed level, not affecting the use of the site for route planning). ...

OldTurn3.jpg.0a1e8d916869e79131ef703bd91c57dc.jpgThe Googlemap shows the overall straightness of the original OozellsSt to Farmer's Bridge line, compromised by the remodelling of the corner by the SeaLife Centre. As an aside, the three "Birmingham Canal Old Line" names are not accurate ...
