At Sete, the town on the Mediterranean coastcreated when the Canal du Midi was built, barges wait before unloading cargoes of grain.Alas, such, trade on the Midi has since disappeared, despite an attempt to bring its substandard locks up to Freycinet dimensions.

Watneys Red Barrel!

Yum yum.......(not)

😃

ETA I'm so old I can remember trying to drink the revolting stuff

Red Barrel was the English beer they had on tap on the RHMS Britanis on our way from NZ to the UK in 1974, reduced our expectations of UK beer to very low levels.

Fortunately CAMRA came to the rescue after we had landed.

You timed it about right. At that time I used to walk past CAMRA's office every day in term time on my way to walk. It was just a front room in a Victorian house in Alma Road, St. Albans, I'm not sure that I knew what it was at the time, but within a couple of years it was making a considerable impact on British people's drinking habits.

Come to think of it, the first pint of real ale I ever tasted was in the pub where CAMRA had been founded, the Farriers' Arms in St. Albans. This was swiftly followed by the second and third. That was probably in 1975. The landlord was a Mr. Vardy - a surname which was unfamiliar to most people at that time!

Today 2018 in Chatillon en Bazois on the Nivernais. Good mooring ready for the fireworks. The boat behind is a wooden replica of the Loire boats and he makes and sells crepes. There is a 180 degree bend after a bridge upstream which is really difficult.
