This is at Bascote looking along the old narrow chamber with new wide locks alongside; it looks like a derelict / restoration-project canal.

At one of the GU locks with a similar abandoned narrow lock alongside, I came across a mother duck at the bottom, quacking loudly at her brood of ducklings swimming in the narrow lock chamber above. Thinking I was going to do a good deed, I went to the boat to get the fisherman's landing net that was there to rescue fallen in cats. While walking back I found out what mum's plan was as each duckling made the six feet or so leap off the stop planks in to the bottom pound. Ducklings are small and fluffy, so they fall very slowly. The last duckling was very unsure about making the jump, but eventually plucked up the courage. Once they were all down, the family swam off.

Corrected from #4697: well-spotted. Not Stockton but Bascote.

Bascote Bottom lock was what Peter titled it when posting on Canal Plan https://canalplan.org.uk/photo/ftgm_3

Yes, well spotted and good detective-work ?

Looking t'other way (2018) has the same illusion of a derelict / restoration-project canal and from 2018, some of the white lining has worn away and the reeds have expanded their influence

Stockton Locks are similar but the offside wall of the old narrow locks isn't as easily visible
