June 1997, and a view down the Iron Gates on the Danube in Serbia. Towards the bottom of the Iron Gates, behind me taking the photo, the navigation was improved in the late 19th century by steam locomotives used for hauling barges up the steepest part of the gorge. Today, the water level is much higher after the construction of the Djerdap hydro scheme, while the locomotives are now underwater, it being too expensive to remove them.

June 1994 and the Semken Navigation, a canal system for carrying turf down to Bremen. It was built in the late 18th century which continued in use until the early 20th century. The photo shows the remains of one of the simple flash locks used by boats, and still used for regulating water levels.

22 hours ago, Captain Pegg said:

Loving the pictures of the BCN before it became an urban forest. I miss the views across both levels from the train at Smethwick, and of Perry Barr top flight from the M6. Although the latter was mostly eradicated by sound barriers. Just about the one unreconstituted view still available is looking up Oldbury locks from the M5.

Speaking to someone last weekend they seemed to think I was mad in suggesting there were far too many trees on the BCN

Looking forward to heading back here in a few weeks. Sadly no fish and chips though. The excellent fish and chip shack on the harbour suffered a massive fire last month 😥
