Shake down run on the Trent.

Just enough time on a single tide for a plod to Gainsborough, half an hours Shake down and a plod back to Torksey again.

This evening 2023

spacer.pngSign beyond Leek Tunnel Caldon C discouraging craft going to the River Churnet Aqueduct/Feeder, which is the limit of navigation. Having turned 70' boats there in the 1970s, and Copperkins there in 2019, it is a challenge to ignore the sign. A boater moored near the winding hole, awaiting completion of the Hazelhurst bridge closure had recently spent a couple of hours pullin back a 58' boat which was seriously stuck at the Aqueduct.

So a challenge to do it again this afternoon ... Much more pulling on ropes, rocking, poling etc than in 2019, and then the last couple of inches on the piling succumbed when the steerer walked to the front to investiate and the back could be pulled the necessary inches over the mud: maybe it is all more silted because longer boats are discourage by the (self-fulfilling) sign _sigh_spacer.png

and yesterday in 2007 -

Near Endon Basin CaldonC. These days the sign on the ex-swivel-bridge base direct boats from both directions to the towingpath side. From the bridge direction, this seems to be a normal 'Keep Right". I wonder if a steerer would expect oncoming boats to be passing t'other side ... ?? Standing on the bridge could have some free entertainment ...

Bridge 37, Hazelhurst Bridge, Caldon Canal. About which there is a stoppage notice, the latest of which says "There have been several challenges which have resulted in the requirement to extend this stoppage by 2 weeks. Taking the end date to 06/04/2023 ... We have worked closely with our contractor to enable the navigation to be open ahead of Easter". Lots to do, then, but nobody was doing any of it today ...

Hello 08004799947. I brought my sixfoot ten inch boat through this tunnel this morning. It didn't say anything about width when I went in. But at t'other end it said the tunnel is only sixfoot six inches wide. Am I a criminal ?? I was rather hoping that there might be some mistake. But surely somebody designed this notice, and filled in an order, and somebody made the sign, and somebody else checked it, then made another order and somebody came and put it up. And then there would have been managers. One of them must have known that the sign was saying that no narrowboats could possibly go through.

2.03m is 6ft 7.9 inches, butttttt, 2.08 is 6ft 9.89 inches. I'm not one for conspiracy theory, but in this instance, who knows.

As every fule knows 2.13m is 6ft 11.9 inches.

I think it's pretty narrow.

Great Haywood T&M. Named for the Exeter Canal ?? or the Caledonian  ??   or from Australia ?? or from this map in Speedwell Cavern, which has the detail:

L2879_20190420_0100b.jpg.0cda110fa8fa393417983a7cc5130d84.jpgL2879_20190420_0100a.thumb.jpg.7d8895bc037cfbee99a47b93a71f3c7e.jpg

As an aside, bellringers who named a method thus were required to change it to "Farthest Canal"

Perhaps they just said it too quickly. As You Do.
