There was a rope makers in Rochdale until around 2000. They had a ropewalk at Edenfield, on the edge of the moors, a long damp shed with ferns growing inside. Used to buy cotton rope to make trapezes for the Circus.

Yes, the nice MrGoogle found a video about it from a heritage archive site here which says: The former Britannia Rope and Twine Ltd factory, in Elm Street, Edenfield, closed its doors in 2001. ... "It was famous for making the longest piece of rope in the country - measuring... 100 metres. Products ranged from skipping ropes to ropes for boxing rings; ... hangman’s nooses and the rope-pulls for toilets used in Butlin’s holiday camps. ".

Yes. We bought up some of the last 1 inch cotton rope for the Circus school. Their offices and sales were on Red Lane in Rochdale, the ropewalk about 8 or 10 miles away.
