Uranus at Baits Bite Lock, Horningsea, Cambridgeshire, River Cam, public art, part of a trail (which is in Cambridge until the end of August 2022, see here) along the river, beginning at Midsummer Common with the Sun and the planets nearest to it. The trail shows the relative distances between the planets' orbits, marking each planet with a coloured arch. The furthest, the Pluto marker, is 8.5 km from the start, at Clayhithe. Telford's Beacon and Tay Road Bridge, Perth And Kinross, Scotland.  The lighthouse once guarded the entry between King William IV Dock and the tidal harbour. which was filled in for the building of the Tay Road Bridge. The 170 year-old beacon was later relocated to the water’s edge.  Picture by MaryRodgers

After which the river is much narrower, and the current much faster, until we came to a little white water.

Unfortunately, no time to try and press on further, so back down river again.

In 2014 on the Nivernais canal in the section where these lift bridges are. Usually there is a small landing stage either side of the bridge not really big enough or deep enough for barges like ours. As herself couldn’t wind them up ,or down, and didn’t fancy steering through they were quite a lot of work. Later some have been electrified with a control on both sides of the canal so passing walkers are more than happy to operate them.
