Standing on our centrally-heated towingpath at Little Venice Visitor Moorings, crew-glumness was caused by the reluctance of the engine-battery to start the engine.

Welcome assistance came from the boat behind which connected our battery to its charging mechanisms while both crews exchanged boating stories and coffee. While we can normally stand our ground on things-wound-around-the-prop, our sometime-yachtsman-neighbour had needed anchor, diving-gear and serious cutting-tools to extract his propellor from a trawlnet in shark-patrolling waters.

We resolved to stick to bedsteads on the Rochdale.

(repost from 2021, from which these photos disappeared into the ether)

spacer.png Routine policecar patrols had been suspended for the day, and replaced by footpatrols, which themselves seem to have become community-engagement by way of snowballing.

spacer.pngRepairs to Leeds Lock  A+C.  Looking through the disused parallel chamber with the upper gates to the right of the image and the stopplanks in the outer lower gates in the distance. The staircase is for a C&RT open-day alongside a theatrical event entitled Hidden Depths, to celebrate the lock repairs. This was planned for the bottom of the lock, but a pump malfuction caused relocation to the stepped semicircle at the adjacent Leeds Dock  (and a refund of the ticket price)

spacer.pngThere were nibbles and mulled-substances. The audience were each issued with a flatcap, and two pieces of string - one to tie around each trouserleg as defence against rats. This was to put us in the mood of the times described, rather than against a modern threat. Or So They Said. It would have been more atmospheric at the bottom of the lock, but brilliant nonetheless.

The guillotine seems to leak a lot, the paddle was down and gate fully down top paddles full up yet the top gate was very tough to open due to the leaking guillotine both times we went through this year.

While boating is nice all boats need work and money. Big old wooden sailing boats needs lots of work and lots of money to keep them afloat and doing what they were built to do.

In the case of the 100 year old plus yachts of the Classic Yacht Charitable Trust in Auckland that is to race.

Back to the work. Slipping for antifouling and anode replacement this morning. The two biggest boats of the fleet, 1894 Robert Logan designed and built Waitangi, and the 1897 Arch Logan designed and built Thelma.

Almost identical rigs but half a generation difference in the hulls.

Bit like icebergs  nearly 3m underwater on Waitangi.20220204_111803.jpg.2ab49a0690ae4d03f73d57b6d5c39556.jpg20220204_132721.jpg.d622ec6bd81fd55b9207efb5b699a8cb.jpg20220204_104224.jpg.ae03f07656ae6547984d2d1c17b7c243.jpg

Think I'll stick with my own anti fouling job. Done in just over 2 litres !
