On this day 2010

The big freeze starts on the Fossdyke.

From memory it was 12 weeks until the waters thawed.

There were several casualties of the ice in Burton Waters this winter. One large and expensive italian cruiser had a cracked hull and the insurers paid for it to be broken free from the ice, divers to put the slings under and a large crane to lift it out and put it on a trailer so it could be chocked ashore and assessed. There were also numerous cracked engine blocks

(direct water cooled engines) and plenty of domestic water freezes.

Despite heating the boat our domestic water pump didn't survive the big freeze and our trim tab mountings were sheared off by the ice.

There are certain aspects of boating that we certainly do not miss.

It is coming up the the time of year that was always very expensive for us with the boat. It would in more recent years have been out of the water by now and we would be finding all of the (usually very expensive Volvo Penta) parts that need replacing/repairing by now as well as racking up bills for storage ashore and lifting in and out.

Today at Droitwich.

Electric fishing for Zander control. A couple of very large tubs full taken out, with some huge fish in there.

Easier and quicker than maggot dangling!

And very good eating.

When I see them doing this stretch of the T&M I always try to be there at the end of their day and am always happily given a fish.
