I'm pretty sure that Blackburn closure was in 1990, as in the September we were on a first wedding anniversary trip and unable to go through Blackburn.

L08716s.jpg.5a5f0e1e688d7360d7af6917faa5734f.jpgHere we are at Sprotbrough on 1June1991 on our way to Sheffield, where we turned around and retraced our steps to Keadby, Newark and up the T&M to Middlewich.

The Blackburn stoppage on the L&L which was the cause of our return this way is first mentioned in Waterways World as "Br 102A to Blackburn Top Lock" in the May1991 edition, with a phone number for enquiries, but no end date. This is repeated in the June and July editions. In August1991 the same details are said to be "ufn" and this was repeated in September. In October 1991 it was "until March 1992" and this was repeated in November, December and January1992. In February 1992 it was said to be "until April" and in March1992 "until mid-May". In April1992 it was "until 18th May" and this was repeated in the May edition. There was no mention in June1992 or later, so we can assume the canal did reopen in 18May1992.

In February1990 WW, there is mention of a Blackburn Locks stoppage "until 18 Mar" and this is repeated in the March edition. In April 1990 to October 1990 inclusive, there are no  stoppages detailed on the L&L main line, although there was one on the Rufford Branch until June 1990. Short-duration emergency stoppages, of course, never made it to WW's "What's On" pages.

It took well over a year for the slip to be repaired as they were arguing over who was responsible. BW finally contacted me, and I was able to show that there had been major excavation work done when the ASDA store was being built, and it was that which caused the slip. The first photo shows the site after the slip, with the towpath wall collapsed. The second shows an earlier slip on the other side of the canal in 1954, but it also shows the original level of ground on the towpath side, before excavation by the builders of the ASDA store caused a stoppage.

Apologies Peter, it seems you are right. The bank slipped in March 1991.

Must have been another stoppage at Blackburn that stopped us. We were on a Shire Cruisers one way truip from Burnley to Sowerby Bridge, and set off in the 'wrong direction' intending to visit Blackburn before turning and heading east on the L&L, but in the end we only got part way there. Having looked at the map we could have got to Eanam Wharf even with the canal closed alongside Asda, so I guess the stoppage was somewhere to the east.

Brilliant to bring together all these resources about a (cosmically) small incident thirty years ago.  I always enjoy having a reason to open the old Waterways Worlds, ...
