Stroudwater canal today- The Ocean.

Large supports have been cast on site to restore the railway bridge once again to its more appropriate function. Likely to be too large to transport. All was scheduled for May BHol 2021 but the foundations are needing to be  more substantial. Towpath will close from Mid Oct till Christmas when all needs to be place during the close down. It’s the main Plymouth to Birmingham former GWR line.

It was never a GWR line, only part of BR's Western Region. It was built by the Bristol & Gloucester Railway company that was bought by the Midland Railway to become part of their Birmingham to Bristol route.

Many thanks, I understood that  Beards Mill viaduct, originally timber  some 200 yards down from the canal was designed by Brunel, so had put two and two together, thanks for the correction.

Presumably that's on the line that goes through Stroud which the canal parallels up to Sapperton tunnel. That line was part of the GWR's original South Wales Main Line.

Although the Bristol & Gloucester Railway was originally broad gauge. Brunel may have been that company's Engineer.

It slides in for towing and out when stopped for extra space. Look at the slight step in the roofline where the extending bit goes under the main roof.

I often think narrow boats would benefit from the same feature!

Nope, it's worse than that - it folds up like a trailer tent!

No doubt you would be fine towing it slowly - to save folding it up?

Well thats why I was confused. Beards Mill viaduct designed by Brunel  is on the Plymouth to Birmingham line via Gloucester and Cheltenham, its 200 yards or so further towards Bristol than the Ocean/ canal crossing also originally a laminated wood viaduct I believe. The line to Paddington from Gloucester leaves for Stonehouse Stroud Sapperton Kemble Swindon some 1/2 mile Gloucester way. So the viaduct designed by Brunel is around 3/4 mile away from the Paddington to Gloucester GWR line which I why I had presumed the line over the canal is a GWR line !

Well I've learnt something too as I didn't know the Midland Railway ever owned any of Brunel's broad gauge infrastructure. The operation of the parallel and often inter-mingled Midland and Great Western lines between Cheltenham and Standish Junction (the place 1/2 mile north of Ocean that you refer to) was complicated until they were rationalised in 1960s/70s.

As for Beard's Mill viaduct the original Brunel timber viaduct must be long gone?

Replaced in 1882-3 with a brick and iron structure.
