It's one of many attempts to keep the external appearance of a working boat (approximately) authentic while using it for more comfortable navigation (including for a larger crew). In this version, the hold appears partially clothed-up, but without side-cloths. It needs some bankside accommodation for the pod when not in use, and a lifting device to transfer it. Not, I suppose, for everyone.

Thanks for that. So functionally, it was closely what it resembled, a simple camping ridge tent. But perhaps with the additional feature of a walkable ridge pole/board?
