Sunken 30 metre barges on the old link with the river at Cravent, Canal du Nivernais, superceded by the Freycinet route of the 1880s

Although I realise that boats do wear out and that they are superseded by more modern transport, such a sight always saddens me. I feel the same when I see a derelict steam locomotive though, oddly, scrap cars don't have the same effect on me.

Encouragement for historic boat owners. Scenes around Farndon Field Bridge (Bridge No 18, A46) Newark River Trent

I’m sure the “Leicester Trader” is still there, it was there when I passed a few months ago. Have also seen it down in Newark, a slow restoration in progress I think.

In 2018 at La Roche on the R. Yonne. This small mooring just below the entrance to the Burgundy canal is a peaceful spot with electricity and it’s possible to get the car near as well. Useful for some last minute painting before the winter. We didn’t know it then but this was to be our last cruise and the barge would be sold during the coming winter.

I remember being told that craft like this were cobbled together to operate on shallow canals, as the paddle wheel required less draught than a propeller. The K&A in its early restoration days was mentioned, which would explain the boat's name. I recall, during our hiring days in the 1990s, seeing one called Jethro Tull.

Lucy restoration, Braunston

Unfortunately the restoration of LUCY seems to have stalled.

There are lots of new planks beside her, seasoning perhaps?

LUCY in her prime, from here: The Barlow Boats (blisworth.org.uk)
