On previous visits, most recently 23Aug2020, the footbridge has the essential elements of a footbridge, in particular stairs to reach the bridge part. But sadly no more. As the lock is usually open at both ends in the summer, it's a half-mile round trip to the road bridge to cross the lock.

That new build housing is in a very dodgy spot, it gets quite deep at the confluence in very wet weather.

On this day in 2018 - Baltic Centre Newcastle River Tyne

KITTIWAKES ON THE TYNEspacer.png

From March until August, NewcastleGateshead Quayside becomes home to 700 pairs of breeding kittiwakes. Normally found on coastal cliffs, the Tyne kittiwakes seem to prefer urban life. This colony is the furthest inland anywhere and makes NewcastleGateshead one of the few urban areas in the world to have a seabird colony in its centre.

The kittiwakes that breed along the Tyne nest on man-made structures, including the side of BALTIC. When old buildings are redeveloped or knocked down, this can disrupt the birds nesting sites. In 1998, a 'kittiwake tower' was built to provide a home for the birds displaced by the redevelopment of BALTIC. This can be seen just down river from BALTIC at Saltmeadows, Gateshead, although as you can see, many kittiwakes have chosen to continue nesting here.

The Tyne Kittiwakes Partnership has formed to ensure that the kittiwake population along the Tyne is safeguarded and to improve our understanding of the birds and their conservation needs. The Partnership includes the Natural History Society of Northumbria, RSPB, Durham Wildlife Trust, Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside Councils, Newcastle University and individual researchers and ornithologists.

spacer.png... and in passing, as it were,  we ill-advisedly cut the corner, and were aground for a while, an event captured in a picture by WilliamJowitt from the moorings above Fairies Hill Lock. Thank you, William, for recording the incident 🙂
