Going down. There is a shaft drive to the rudder on Luciole laid across the after deck to the cogwheels visible here. It takes several turns of the wheel to get from one extreme to the other, so the fish indicator is useful.

I once had a hard day in the sun, descending a 20 lock flight on the upper Canal de Bourgogne. It was really hard work and we were nudging our way in all too often. Only at the end did I discover that someone had parked our wretched little motor scooter (used for return journeys by whoever was driving our bus) with its wheel against the rudder dtive shaft. So I'd been turning that as well.

NB Lock gates are made of metal here, lasting far longer than modern-day oak ever will. With a host ofUK waterways rrestored in the 1990s coming up for gate renewal. is it not time to move to steel instead?

This day 2009 on the K&A

and we wonder why the National Trust on the River Wey require narrowboats to open both gates when ascending a lock.

Speaking with C&RT managers at Stanley Ferry lock workshops a few years ago, it seems that they replace steel with steel and wood with wood, rather than make separate assessments for each location. It might all have changed by now ...

Yes, I don't really understand railways. I thought perhaps that these other bits of the train had the locomotive at its head.

(And the train it pulls will stop at railway stations, NOT train stations)

There was me thinking that the railway was always stationary and the trains that moved . . . . !

Ah, but bell codes for a train include a light engine, ie an engine without a train.

Compare 31Mar2007 Barnsley Canal reservoir (that was looking at a postcard of the location as once-it-was) and now fenced off. Reservoir

Also compare 31Mar2007  and posting this day 2020 also from 11Jun2012 (when noted that sadly that  the Barnsley Dearne and Dove Canals Trust is  winding-itself-up. Here)

A French lunch time in Menetreol-sous-Sancerre today 2009. The cafe is just across the road from the moorings and we stayed 3 days because the lunches were so good. We also brought our Sancerre from a local grower after having tasted it in the family kitchen.
