Very close quarters on the Marne Saone canal. Lots of mud and I dare say a few choice words . Taken from Facebook today.

Rearrange Don Juan's home port and you've got one of the "choice words".

River water level indicators: this was the only weir exit on the C+H without one - and the entrance nearest to a weir. However, could not find the indicator board.

"1. Open combination lock" Good plan. The aspiring rescuer can do this if they have a charged mobile phone and they have first "CALL 999 ASK FOR FIRE SERVICE" then "QUOTE LOCATION" and wondered what what3words is all about. Then done the other "1. ENTER CODE" (hopefully twiddling the dials in the dark isn't too difficult as there are only four dials to line up) and "2 PUSH BUTTON TO OPEN". Then there are some pictures to help with steps 2. 3. 6. 7.

Today, 2021

Not a navigable waterway, although it may look like one. Upper millpond, Gibson Mill, Hardcastle Crags, near Hebden Bridge.

Weir and sluice controlling water into the lower millpond.

Gibson Mill and the lower millpond.

And although not navigable waterway as such, old postcards show rowing boats for hire here.

What an evocative name, "Hardcastle Crags"; it could be the title of a Northern historical drama series.

Not forgetting the Crags' most famous resident, The Northern Hairy Wood Ant.

Today in 2017 lots of weed on the Burgundy canal south of Dijon. The weed cutter is kaput above the lock. Some of the lock keepers scoop great piles of the stuff out whilst waiting for boats but others only move it when it stops the gates opening.
