 USAAF B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft

Mi Amigo

from the 364th Bomber Squadron,

based at Chelveston, Northamptonshire,

returning from a bombing mission,

was heavily damaged by enemy fighter aircraft.

Engines faltering, it crashed in Endcliffe Park.

All ten crew died.

John Kriegshauser, pilot

received a posthumous

Distinguished Flying Cross

for his courage and airmanship,

avoiding hitting children playing in the park.

Tony Foulds

is pictured this morning

by the Mi Amigo memorial

in Endcliffe Park Sheffield,

which he has tended over the years.

In 2019 on the 75th anniversary of the Mi Amigo crash, there was a commemorative flypast at 8.45am, including one of the aircraft flying low over our house on its way to the park. Thousands of people were in the park and many of them continued to Sheffield basin for the bicentenary event there.

Warrington Transporter Bridge (wikiRiver Mersey

If that is the Widnes Transporter Bridge (connecting Widnes to Runcorn), then I can remember my Grandfather taking me across it in his car just before it closed, and then a few days later taking me across the bridge that replaced it. Must have been sometime before 1962, when we moved from Lancashire to Surrey.

It is not the Runcorn-Widnes transporter, which was demolished when the new bridge opened c1963, but the surviving one in Warrington, near Bank Quay.

Ah, I was not aware of that transporter bridge. I will look it up next time I am "oop north" visiting relatives.

Not a great picture, but a reminder of the days when locks on the Seine were less than user-friendly. With rough sloping sides they made up in size for lack of sophistication. Taking an age to negotiate, they had separate groups of lock-keepers for the two ends. Communication seemed to be by bicycle.

On the Seine today, despite the vertical walls, there are often no lock-keepers at all. Someone sits in an office somewhere else, looking at what the cameras tell them then pushing at buttons.

Site of the 2012 Dutton Breach T&M

From a C&RT open day on the worksite this day.

The breach cost £2.1m repairs (NorthwichGuardian).

C&RT had taken over the canals three months before. Nobody was injured. VinceMoran, acting Chief Executive said (in the context of compensation for landowners) that a few very-valuable sheep had got their feet wet.

The milepost was swept away in the breach and recovered from a field.
