The house to the left of that wall, with grounds going down to the River Calder, was for sale recently. But with it came ownership of the bridge over the canal (which is its only road access), and that responsibility put off some friends of ours who were rather taken with the house otherwise!

Going down the hill at Ronquieres, plus a B & W photo taken when the inclined plane first opened in 1968. Britain's waterways at that time were not in such a happy state.

I don't know if it's still there but the museum at the top of the tower there was well worth a visit.

Just how much heat do those cables under the towpath put out?

None of it reached the inside of the back cabin. Peering out, I wondered where the army of shovel-bearing pathclearers had gone to.

Routine policecar patrols had been suspended for the day, and replaced by footpatrols,

which themselves seem to have become community-engagement by way of snowballing ...

A shocking display of police brutality going on there.?

More from this day in 2009

spacer.pngStanding on our centrally-heated towingpath at Little Venice Visitor Moorings, crew-glumness was caused by the reluctance of the engine-battery to start the engine.

Welcome assistance came from the boat behind which connected our battery to its charging mechanisms while both crews exchanged boating stories and coffee. While we can normally stand our ground on things-wound-around-the-prop, our sometime-yachtsman-neighbour had needed anchor, diving-gear and serious cutting-tools to extract his propellor from a trawlnet in shark-patrolling waters.

We resolved to stick to bedsteads on the Rochdale.

C&RT open-day event. Theatrical event entitled Hidden Depths to celebrate the lock repairs. Was planned for the bottom of the lock but pump malfuction caused relocation to the stepped semicircle at the adjacent Leeds Dock.

There were nibbles and mulled-substances. The audience were each issued with a flatcap, and two pieces of string - one to tie around each trouserleg as defence against rats. This was to put us in the mood the times described rather than against a modern threat. Or So They Said. It would have been more atmospheric at the bottom of the lock, but brilliant nonetheless.
