Far right in the photo. I think this must have been the year they told us about returning, in April, to find the roof bare of plants, but that the good folks of the Aylesbury Canal Society had taken them ashore and tended for them in a spot behind the club rooms. Yes a good community at Aylesbury Canal Society. The plants were in their place here in February . That winter did have its colder moments - from 'oop north at Acton Bridge T&M on Christmas Day. Aylesbury Basin's surrounding buildings give some protection from worst of the wintry blasts.

Ship called Royal Clipper. As with steam engines, technology of a previous generation looks god but it is worth reflecting on how such a vessel as this must have been towards the end of that era with designers pushing the technology to its limits. Sometimes, one sign that a particular technology is coming to the end of its possibilities is when feature on feature is added and piled high (literally in this case) in a desperate attempt to squeeze even more performance out of it. As with our canal network, always good when there are those around prepared to investing in keeping it alive and kicking! And also, as here, not to be afraid of adding some useful 21C technology as well.
Dav and Pen
This ship is owned by a Swedish man who has fulfilled his ambition of recreating a large sailing ship modeled on the famous flying P windjammers. The hull was found in Poland and was an unfinished vessel. As it’s a passenger ship it has to have all the solas approved systems plus of course a couple of diesels to make sure it can keep to its schedule. On this crossing one night it got up to 17 knots purely under sail until the mate decided to shorten sail. The big square sails are pulled up by rotating motors in the ends of the arm and pulled down with ropes around powered capstans. There’s nobody hanging on for dear life unfurling the sails. There is a movement now to install rotor sail systems on cargo ships to help cut co2 emissions with Norwegian ship owners taking the lead.
