This day in 2010 I was visiting Nanjing and the Rouge Canal, which linked the arable and fish farming area around the lake to the south of the canal with Nanjing, avoiding a shallow section of the Yangtze River. The canal opened around 1395, linking two navigable rivers, some of the earliest to be made navigable. The photo shows some of the groins for channeling the river. The history of these waterways is preserved on steeles, the photo showing some of the students I was with examining them. The rivers are still in use today, but the Rouge Canal no longer provides a through route, and is just a tourist attraction.

Today. Opposite the Shady Oak pub, Shropshire Union Canal.

Drawbridge

I recollect seeing the drawbridge lowered on one trip, on the way back from t'pub,  but sadly did not have a camera to hand. From the boat in 2017L2613_20170406_0160s.jpg.924d2a2e29b64d2ea673e422f6e7c8dc.jpg

Nine years ago today, my first trip on the Waverley. We embarked at Southend pier, it having started from Tower Pier that morning. Our trip took us to just beyond Tower Bridge, calling at Tilbury on both legs, but not at Tower Pier. Instead we sat in mid-stream between HMS Belfast and The Tower until we were turned by a tug for the return trip. Fine weather and The Thames was like a mill pond.

These were the passengers from the first leg disembarking at Southend pier head. As there was no call at London on subsequent passages, they would probably have returned by train after a day in the marvellous October sunshine, quite different from today's gloom. Special rail fares were offered when booking.  Due to cancellation, and despite proceeding to the station immediately on disembarcation, we ended up on the last train of the day. We had just turned up on spec and had to wait until all pre-booked ticket holders had boarded to ensure there would be room for us. It must have been loaded to its full capacity that day.   The pier had only just been re-opened after repairing the damage caused by it having been struck by a boat.

spacer.pngThe Southend collision was unrelated to Waverley. It was the Brodick Pier in Arran which Waveley collided with in September and brought to an end the already-abbreviated 2020 cruising season.

In 2011 we were on the dock having some doubling done after the 7 year survey. As the work dragged on it became obvious that things were not right with the shipyard. The welder kept getting taken off the job and there was an obvious shortage of materials. We did eventually get away after much pressure from myself. 3bdays later the yard went into bankruptcy.

In 2015 still touring New England came across this steam railway at the town of Essex Connecticut. The train ride came with an option of a trip on the Connecticut River aboard the paddle boat Betty Thacker. We didn’t have time for the river trip.

The classic American looking locomotive was built in China in the 1980s.
