1999, and the lock at Bleiswyjk, close to Rotterdam. This type of lock, similar to those found on early waterways in Essex and Sussex, were built in the 18th century. The framing was necessary because they were built on reclaimed land or former river bed, and so could not have a solid foundation. the wooden framing allowed them to settle whilst the gates could still be operated.

The card in the window gave this one's history,  "Ford Anglia, 100E, 2 Door Saloon, purchased on the 19th July 1955 from the Premier Garage, Market Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. The car is completely original with 10 HP side valve engine and 3 speed gearbox and no modifications"

These were branded as Anglias until 1959 when the new (backwards backwindow) shape 105E took over the name.

Many entertaining hours holding spanners for my father's tinkering under the bonnet of (a black) one-of-these 312BHK. Nostalgia ...

My parents had a white one of those in the early 60s.

And the Stratford on Avon version, once (allegedly) referred to, by a local lady Councillor, as "Mr. Hutchings' monstrous erection", built like this for much the same reason as Pluto's example.

Reassembling the weir upstream of Auxerre. As the flood level drops and navigation is to be restored, various bit of ironmongery are retrieved from the river bed, folded into place, then the timber 'needles' that provide the barrier are brought out of storage and put into place. It looks, and is, a dodgy business.

Gradually, over the years, these old needle barrages have been replaced by modern, electrically-operated barriers. Pulling out needles in the middle of the night when an unexpected flood arrived was one of several good reasons why lock-keeping staff, particularly lower down the Yonne where the forces are enormous, could sometimes be grumpy.

1995, and the pertuis at Accolay which was used for rafting timber on a river alongside the Canal de Nivernais.

This is followed by two photos of the turf canal at Giethoorn, north of Zwolle in the Netherlands. The first was taken on this day in 1999, and the second in 2017. Road access is strictly limited, and the canal used today for carrying materials for those living alongside. It is a bit of a local tourist area, and people were waiting for the candle-lit procession of boats in the evening. In 2017, we found an excellent bed and breakfast in a thatched house by the canal.

The bored-looking horse had seen it all before and was more interested in nibbling my sandwiches. Hence the lack of accompanying video while fending-off these unwelcome attentions.

Some photos of the Turf route in Friesland 1988. It’s made up of a number of small canals with some low fixed bridges in one of the towns. I believe the route became run down and little used but was restored when leisure use became more prominent.

The locks have off set gates and are wider than the gates so many more boats can get in. The sluis is the Dam Sluis and the pole by the bridge keeper has a clog on the end for the brug geld.
