Castleford Junction A+C and the lock. Crew of ThePleiades had emptied the lock and the mechanism wasn't behaving very well. But we had a bellringing appointment and couldn't wait to see how long it took. Compare #388 (2006)  #2637 (2013)

where at, and qtr or peal?

A quick decode for not-bellringers: a Peal is a bellringing performance taking about three hours, in which each bell rings about five thousand times, and if there's a serious mistake during that time, everyone stops, the performance doesn't count in the records, and the band will have to have another try another time. A Quarter Peal (qtr) is a quarter of the length. Our afternoon was ringing handbells, and if we had practiced enough, it would have been 1280 changes of Little Bob Major, but we need more practice before my new composition will come round. After our next canal trip, maybe ...  Towerbell ringing for church services has only recently resumed in a limited way after the suspension for the Accursed Virus

The Polle pictures are similar in principal to how craft crossed the Loire using the current at Briare before the aqueduct was built, though there were no overhead wires there.

The boats here are unloading on the River Aire at Whitehall Road Power Station, Leeds. To get there, they had to pass through Arches Lock, under the railway station, and then sheer across the river. A bollard was provided a couple of hundred feet above the lock cut entrance to which boats could tie and then sheer ot across the river to the power station.

That's pretty much what was at Briare before the aqueduct. There was a long breakwater just upstream on the Chatillon-sur-Loire side (left bank) with a winch on the end so they could be pulled into a long approach channel to the first lock on that side. There was a winch on the Briare side, but no corresponding 'breakwater' to protect them from the flow.

The 1971 IWA rally in Beckets park Northampton. The gentleman in the suit is Tony Grantham after whom the bridge at Hillmorton bottom lock is named . He lived in the big house by the lock and worked for BWB. He was the front man when the BSC was proposed and I went to many committee meetings at Melbury house where the users were outnumbered by the trade who saw a lot of opportunity for work in the regulations that eventually became the rules in force today. He was our go to man when as Ashby canal transport we had difficulties.

A rope-throwing stall, no prizes. Modesty precludes saying which throw was spot-on.

Suffice to say that the consolation prize was sitting in the deckchair.

Fascinating. The superstructure has a sort of family resemblance to Fox boats, built of course in March. Was anything written on the placard at the far end which gave any clues?

Compared to April 2012. It had rained a 'bit'.

L09997s_19930824-Tuesday.jpg.68fdafbabfe0ec8193be8b89af868b30.jpgWe passed it twice, on a visit to March for fuel (pic), having been around the TwentyFoot with all its weedropes and low bridges. Sadly there were no cameraclicks on the front in either direction and I can't remember if it was enlightening in any way. We returned via SixteenFoot and FortyFoot so didn't pass again. Should have asked the chap just inside the window ...

Delamere Dock River Weaver. Flotilla of boats heading for IWA National Rally at Salford Quays along the Manchester Ship Canal from Ellesmere Port, on a side trip up the River Weaver. A malfunction of Weaton Marsh Lock caused a diversion this way. The dock is also a lock, so we needed to wait for all the boats to arrive (in breasted pairs) before setting off up the Weaver.

L1020a_20030824_0023s.jpg.3342c513f41a73b6a901ae9f3eab95f0.jpgEarly in the morning, a hot air balloon appeared near the campsite. It came down with controlled burns and landed in the next vacant field, where a support crew quickly arrived to pack it up.

It had been carrying some paying passengers, and the support crew had collected the landowner who joined a champagne celebration. This sadly did not extend to whatever-is-the-ballooning-equivalent-of-gongoozlers from our camp site.

After landing, whatever-is-the-ballooning-equivalent-of-steerer stood on the basket, and having an audience, feigned need of knowing where they were and which was the way to the road; it is a well-planned process, with a good number of potential landing sites pre-consulted to give the passengers the best (and least bumpy) experience for their money
