St Ives River Great Ouse. Boats moored for the IWA National Festival. And an expensive grounding in the field behind.

We were there, moored about five boats away from the bank.

There was some torrential rain. We gave full marks to the enterprising shoe-shop manageress who got emergency supplies of wellingtons sent in from another branch. We still have the pairs which we bought there, too!

It was a damp weekend. EA had tried lowering the river a bit to help the site dry out, but it probably didn't help.

Was that the firm belonging to a Mr. Rimmer who, in a moment of confusion, sold the same shares to several different people? Or was that Challenger?

No, that was Challenger. This is a rival company, Ownerships,  (which also eventually ceased trading a couple of years after this photo, but not for the same reason). Incidentally, that is me in the middle  helping to show off a new boat.

The ferry at Polle on the Weser in 2017. It uses the flow of the river to move from side to side, assisted by winches adjusting its position using the wire ropes connected to the high-level ropes across the river.

The Polle pictures are similar in principal to how craft crossed the Loire using the current at Briare before the aqueduct was built, though there were no overhead wires there.

At Gray on the R. Saone today 2006. There are many types of old Dutch barges each made for a purpose. Both of these were original sailing boats, ours having been built for a brickworks and is a type called a Hagenaar which I have been told was built to a width that could get through some bridges to The Hague. It was certified to carry 55 tones.

Someone else a long way from home, somewhere in France, I really must make an effort to catalogue photos, I doubt if the people who built the Bantock (?) nearest the camera ever thought it would be more than a few miles from Brum.

The former ferry at Hampton Loade on the River Severn operated in a similar fashion. Operating for about 400 years, it closed in 20016.

I doubt whoever built the Bantock ever thought it would sport curtains or blue plastic balloons either.
