The Chain Ferry East to West Cowes. River Medina. It has a webcam here which, as I write, is even duller than would normally be expected.

After purcgasing Secunda, we cruised around a while, first by a roundabout route to Amsterdam, then back more directly to Friesland. Here she is in the lock near Enkhuizen in the intermediate dam across what was once the Zuiderzee.

A favourite book is Jan De Hartog's The Lost Sea. Supposedly for children, but recommendable at every level. The days of open water recaptured, and a masterpiece of storytelling.1936052026_ScreenShot2020-08-21at10_58_05.jpg.b085ddefc62d21e271dfa437381831a4.jpg

And while we're on the subject of the IoW......

The hovercraft service gets cancelled when its blowing a hooley, like what it is today.

And.......

No trains for 3 months from next January while the new (OK, ex LT D78 stock but new to us) is commissioned and other works undertaken.

... a wedding couple have visited the bridge on their way from ceremony to reception, to (I guess) express their commitment to one another by fixing a padlock to the wire and ceremonially casting the key into the waterway.

It is normally only the watertaxi that is allowed to use the Coronation Channel, and that was a planning requirement for the out-of-town shopping centre which it serves.

Because of a stoppage on  the river the dayboat SpaldingBeauty was allowed to use the Channel that day.L2367_20150821-P8217023s.jpg.cffa8d4a1d70f266c2ba9b9b48e50c94.jpg

There are not a lot of these on the inland waterways. Or very few signs to warn of them.

spacer.pngThe current enthusiasm for extended Fenland navigation is Boston To Peterborough Wetland Corridor with the options as the red-dashed lines on the map.  Stamford canal is the blue-dashed line near the end of the River Glen

The West Deeping Heritage Group have information on their website including some aerial photos.

With a rich donor or a dozen, ...
