The short-lived maglev at Merry Hill Shopping Centre, by the Dudley Canal No 1 , BCN. Sadly it was never running when we passed in a boat.

With Secunda and Arthur en route to England, an entertaining couple of houre were spent in teis large circular lock outside Bruges. Two French barges needed to leave through the alternative exit in the background, and to achieve ths the rest of us had to shuffle around. It was mid-afternoon when operations began, but rush hour when they ended. This was a pity for the people in cars, since lifting the bridges also took an age, with several keepers on the case and occasional conferences on what to do next.

Beyond, the route was lonesome, but eerily splendid. We stopped for the night where the second picture was taken

While it's possible to try this idea at any lock, with the camera on the ground, there always seems to be a paddle to wind or another lock to walk-on to. At Hillmorton, on the (rare) occasions that all six locks are in full working order, steering one boat can give this view of t'other-side's steerer. And, below, a more conventional view of the top locks from which we have just emerged.

2014 on the Nivernais Canal. If your lucky somebody passing will raise the bridge otherwise it’s getting off, winding it up and then stopping the other side to wind it down. The little quays provided are to short for us and the depth on the sides is also a problem.

Yet the facilities must have been designed for the use of (I assume) Freycinet-sized péniches; why were these quays not built to a more convenient size?

These little quays are fairly new, it used to just be bollards in the grass which involved jumping off. I would think that the nearest lock keeper would open them for the peniches or a crew member cycled or walk alongside. Some have now been electrified and so members of the public are happy to work them for you and in school holidays we have had a couple of youngsters tracking us and they are well worth a euro or two

Fazeley Junction - after the houses were built and before the glass wall

I often wondered exactly what was behind that hideous wall.

Blurry builders bunging things up, bamboozling Planning and getting away with it. Now it's an eyesore from the canal and not overly pretty for the residents.

The same applies a bit further along for what used to be the water point and refuse area. build flats above the BW area office, wait for complaints about boaters and smells - sell the office area for residential use - make a profit and move on....

It looks even worse now on the junction as the glass panels have been overtaken by weeds.

In 1987 we had a boatmans holiday in Friesland. Hired a cruiser from Sneekmeer and explored some of the meers and the small canals called the Turf route. At lots of the lift bridges on the lesser waterways a clog was lowered for you to put the fee in my daughter doing it here. Many of the bridge keepers were lady’s who came out of their houses after hearing a blast on the boats horn. We enjoyed it so much we went back for 2 more years to explore more of this vast water world.
