Today in 1999 there was a solar eclipse. We were in Leitrim village on the Shannon Erne link and there were a lot of people waiting to see it. However it clouded right over and there was only a very brief view of the sun and my photo is not worth seeing. These are 2 of the locks on the waterway instead.

Our Lister HA attracted some attention with quite a lot of people knowing the noise and coming to see

At the 1961 eclipse I was in the last year of primary school, and from the TV coverage I memorised the date of the next UK-visible toal eclipse, being the only UK total eclipse in my lifetime, and promised myself I would see it. Four of us on the train from Sheffield to Plymouth the previous afternoon, and woke to a cloudy forecast of what the Grauniad called 'the line of total disappointment'. A magical experience despite being able to see the corona (gosh a word with multiple meanings) only on a large public screen to our right on Plymouth Hoe. Didn't try any photographs at the time, and am entertained by all the flashphotos at the screen in this vid:

This evening 2008. On our way back to our winter mooring at St Jean de Losne we stopped here for a couple of days. Pont d’Ouche where a Stone aqueduct carries the canal over the river. It used to be a hire boat base but due to annual water problems and probably all the locks putting hirers off there are no hire boats on the Saone side of the Burgundy canal. Run by a lovely English lady Bryonney at that time there was a cafe, small shop, and she brought bread every morning. The Sagar barge was owned by 2 very elderly but adventurous Americans whom we knew.
