2016 approaching Auxerre. The 2 arches on the left side are marked as the correct navigation ones whilst the third smaller one has a sign (cevni) indicating its shallow but it has the best headroom. I had seen hotel boats using this one on previous trips so that’s  always been the one we used.

We always use this third arch, with our hotel-barge Luciole - in both directions. It can be tricky coming downstream when the current is strong, since the bridge is on the skew. You have to continue the line of approach that is shown in the photo.

In the days of freight loaded barges used the first arch, the one beside the towpath, making fast to bollards on the shore, then easing through gradually. I tried this once with our previous barge Secunda and was surprised how complicated it became. Each time we  stopped the current pushed the stern in or out depending on the slant of the rudder. I saw then why it took the loaded freighters so long to get through, taking maybe fifteen minutes to do so . Because of the overhead clearance the wheelhouse came under threat and many a conference took place as ropes were released or tightened. The middle arch is better!

Rachael and Julian (with whom we once shared the Big Red boat that has appeared occasionally in this thread) have just bought this boat. Activities thereon have of course been much curtailed by the Accursed Virus.

I crossed with them in Bosworth Tunnel yesterday. You hear them coming from a very long way and their tunnel light reflects beautifully off the water

Rochdale Canal, Rochdale. Keep a Good Lookout Fore and Aft.

Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs) Rule 5 requires that "every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.

It looks as if the vessel, such as it is,  is actually moored. Is COLREG Rule 5 applicable?

But good to see anyway the avian crew taking such a conservative approach to possible advancing hazards.

At Gergy on the R. Yonne. 2016. Big crane turned up early and lifted out the Le Boat (das boot) hire boat. The previous evening he had tried to reverse inside the wooden jetty because all the space had been taken and picked up this lump of wood. The hirer a novice German boater said he would be given the bill by Le Boat and he hoped his insurance would pay!

OK I'l ask. (I'm probably being a bit dim)

But why didn't they just build the bridge with a towpath?? and of sufficient width?

Did somebody cock up?

M62 was built on the line of Rochdale, and there was an access track to a local smallholding. The restoration diverted the canal and adjusted the levels by moving a lock. The access track became this bridge, much to the increasing displeasure of those who accessed their house through the track.
