Bastille day in France. In the morning there’s a parade to the war memorial and usually long speeches. Every village and town has a high firework display late at night with bbq’s and music during the evening. This was at Auxerre and all the boats where moved out of the way before the display and at around 11.30pm all the street lights where switched off before the start

Rowntree Wharf River Foss York ...

.

Cor, proper industry! I love to see these old mill buildings, though I am not sure I would have loved working in one.

No doubt it's all "luxury apartments" nowadays and thus much more salubrious inside.

Does it come with a mooring?

Sadly, navigation on the River Foss has to be completed within the day, and no overnight mooring is allowed.L1663_20100714_0127.jpg.067504a3894e97029f3eae561823a6c4.jpg

A builder's picture of my previous barge, launched by W J Yarwood & Son of Northwich in 1932. Canal Transport Ltd were the original owners, but on being sold to Walter Holden of Skipton in 1950 he changed the name to Arthur, after his son. As such, she stayed with Airedale Canal Services, whose letterhead I attach. A later change was to Bertha, under J K Ebblewhite, then Michael Streat, but Arthur was what I preferred.  I believe she is back to being Mersey now, so she has gone full circle.

As Mr Glover of the Airedale company said in a letter.  "She was always a good boat."

Walter Holden was known as 'Old Growler' locally. His business was taken over by ACC circa 1951, at which time Bill Burton, from the Burton family who operated boats on the St Helens Canal, became involved until the firm closed in 1958.

2014, and Kennet makes her way into Liverpool. The narrows here were installed during the 2WW. Stop planks were fitted at night in case the canal was hit by a bomb, as happened at Sandhills, and seen in this photo from the Waterways Archive.

Not this day but found this old photo of Arthur Bray and Ernie Kendal setting off on their boat Poacher going to Dayton Park with Ernie’s son. They still carried on as if they had a load to deliver.

P7151633s.jpg.deb6f423da308d477becf3922a770107.jpgThe Fulbourne porthole is crochet. The tatting, here, is a different structure.

... and only the forty-six years to have worked out the difference ...

Thanks for that explanation - and welcome.

I must admit I thought that he meant "tattered", and I probably wasn't the only one.
