Opposite Holliday Wharf, Birmingham, W+B

A gondola moored outside The Cube, or it would be if it had been built then.

"... the unlikely combination of gondola rides and Birmingham is now a reality: you can take a romantic ride along the waterways of Brum, champagne in hand, the brainchild of Nico Avdia from Don Salvo, an Italian restaurant in the Mailbox leisure complex. The gondolier will steer your real Venetian vessel past landmarks including Brindleyplace business district and the International Convention Centre. An hour including a bottle of fizz costs £100." ..."Sadly Don Salvo’s restaurant and his gondola are long gone".

Today 2006 following this loaded peniche on the Voges canal. Lots of locks so couldn’t pass but he did let us pass the next day. Although slow they travel for at least 12 hours a day so still cover some distance

A good picture to put on the March of the Widebeams thread I would think, to show what can be managed on a canal not much wider in many places than our own Grand Union Canal.

Incidentally, this waterway, now renamed, used to be part of the Canal de l"Est, built between 1874 and 1882 after routes further east were lost in the defeat inflicted by the Prussians.  Six years to build a waterway 420 kilometres long, with 152 locks and four tunnels, though presumably parts of it were there already. Still, shows what can be done.

We hired WILLOW in 2008. The boat was in an appalling condition inside, all the seat cushions were threadbare, boat stank of diesel, engine oil sloping round in the engine sump, loose bits of paving slab in the cabins and passageways and the wet room had mold in various places. The galley was poor, cupboards almost non existent, diesel cooker and hob, no way of making toast.

After 48 hours we took the boat back, the stench of diesel was making us feel ill.

Apart from that the boat swam beautifly.

Not surprised that incarnation of Middlewich Narrowboats went bust.

Today 2012. Tour de France crossing the canal at Conde sur Marne. They had only just started from Epernay so just a procession but the cavalcade before was good with all the sponsors throwing samples etc at the onlookers.

Gosh 2014 had Tour de France in Yorkshire, of course. Here are preparations at Skipton Festival in May that year

Not this time of year but we went to Limerick in 2010 to watch Northampton Saints play Munster. The Shannon here is tidal but the lock takes the navigation to the big lock at the power station. When we had the narrow boat in Ireland never fancied doing this bit.
