We had some kids with us for the trip from Doncaster, and much though they enjoyed pressing buttons for the commercial locks to Eastwood, it was fun to show them the older locks at Rotherham and Ickles.

We were therefore ready for the meeting with BW planned for the morning, to be escorted up Jordan's Holmes and Tinsley locks and then on to Sheffield Basin: while we live in Sheffield, bring the boat from (at this time) Acton Bridge T&M is a significant journey.

BW had recommended mooring at Eastwood. That makes boat movements up Tinsley flight at least an hour later in the day.

Even the lower Rochdale looks lovely today. Long route to Aldi. New (ish) lock gates needing some use. At least the younger ones have a good bench for a Bob Marley birthday rollup.

Er, way out I'm afraid: Marley's birthday was in February.

The reference was clear, but birthday celebrations are normally observed on or close to someone's birthday.

When got to Aldi, guy in there shopping. About 50, black, tie dyed rainbow top with Bob Marley print and a blue 'Love the NHS' bandana facecovering, Fedora and shades. Now that was one cool dude.

It's just possible to make out on the left in the middle distance, the swingable plank bridge from the towingpath to Worcester Bar.

I remember going through Worcester Bar and having to jump off to open the swing bridge, any idea what date it was removed.

But are they 3 of the original 8? Three of those collapsed in 1965 and were subsequently rebuilt.

Collapse-of-cooling-towers-in-Ferrybridg

A sad, nostalgic view for me. In the late 1960's I was doing my PhD into techniques for the stress analysis of thin shells and box structures. (Believe it or not but cooling towers were much thinner proportionately than egg shells!) Ferrybridge C was a popular test case for new methods.

True - I had forgotten that.

Unfortunately I can't be sure. Mr  Google hasn't updated his aerial photography.

According to the Independent, reporting on the Oct 2019 demolition of four towers,The final three towers are being retained in case a decision is taken to use the ground for a new gas-fired power station.

Gosh, that question highlights a ten-year gap in navigating through Worcester Bar (and indeed most of Birmingham) which hadn't come to mind before. Here we are in

August 1990 with the current footbridge over the narrows.

Some years ago, there was a discussion elsewhere on a similar theme and I have a faint memory of a picture of a different crossing of the narrows, after the plank was removed ...

Geoff Wheat's photo from 1962 shows it just as pleasure boating was beginning.

New house canal side at Cropredy. I quite like this modern house - it would be interesting to see the plans for it.
