The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal ,opened in the post-World War 2 rebuilding programme. Travel along it is the boating equivalent of a drive down the M1, yet a stone's throw away is the charming River Vecht. The bridge with a small cruiser coming through is at Breukelen, after which Brooklyn, New York was named.

L2646_20170618_0236s.jpg.f1e1b1a12db6b19604e16b99b92badc0.jpgSadly, it's all too easy to slip into the canal, and even on a warm day (having avoided all the potential disasters of rotating propellors, drowning, sharp underwater debris, crushing by moving boats, caught by rushing water, ...), it can still be difficult to get out again. Fulbourne has space for equipment-storage and this was the first time this ladder had been called on to help someone out of the canal, and on this occasion it was easily long enough for the job. Both boats carried on in our opposite directions with no permanent discomfort afaik.

We carry a ladder on the roof of our boat for the same purpose. It has been used on a couple of occasions. It is quite difficult to climb out of a canal with a hard such as piled edge. Its all to easy to hurt someone pulling them out with their arms. I do a lot of dinghy sailing and we are taught to recue people from the water by using their bouyancy aid to pull with

A rather lovely craft moored up.

Gosh, had a ride on that one: Beale Park rally 2003 as a tripboat:

L1549_20090618_0190.JPG.878b0b0cfb798c3d7e367cd7efa4de84.JPGOn this day in 2009. Henhurst Lock, Wigan, L&L

BW had adopted a customer service standard of having a lock ladder on each side of wide locks: it's clearly safer that way. To implement the policy across all the single-ladder locks in the Wigan region, management proposed a rolling programme of lock closures starting in the middle of September, rather than alongside works in the the winter works programme. This was not met with any enthusiasm by local navigators, and this sign on the lock nearest the Wigan office was intended to satisfy all parties until the work was fitted-in with other maintenance activities.

Windmill bridge Hanwell. The GWR branch to Brentford is on the bottom, then canal and finally a road bridge over the top.

I have tried a few pictures of Three Bridges, and it's hard to show the three transport modes all crossing one another. Have we a drone to hand ??L03434s.jpg.106123abd401eebfe84d8d4ed5ad365f.jpg

@Tim Lewis has the picture from the railway. Mine are from the road in 1980 and 1979. Also from an old advert
