Dudley Tunnel height guage

I have an inkling they lowered that gauge further when they repositioned the post.
To make it even tougher to get a boat through.

(it used to be closer to the tunnel before the visitor centre was built)

Every time anyone suggests that to Darren Knight (who worked on this full time for the PLA for about 2 years) he goes rather green. "Never again" ....

Yes, but the plan is written now. Much easier to just tweak and update...

On this day in 2012 - Jubilee Pageant at around 7pm

Thames barrier in defence mode.

As explained at the briefings, the Barrier is allowed to close the river for testing purposes only once per year, under its operating legislation. This was moved to coincide with the Pageant, but could only be confirmed at the last moment.

Mooring at far end of the Dock took another half-hour, and we were grateful for the Hilton Hotel for making their toilet/washing facilities available to boaters. It was w-a-r-m in the hotel.

And So To Bed.

Thanks Peter for unique coverage of this event. We watched it on TV from a bleak hotel room in Swansea.

I was in Russia once more, the only foreigner in a group of historians and geographers visiting the Kargopol region of northern Russia. For four days we sailed down the Onega River, camping on the riverside and looking for remains of water mills and anything surviving from the attempt to make the river navigable in the 1870s. We did find the remains of a couple of wooden locks. This is me being the cultured Englishman abroad at the stern one of the inflatables we used. The worst part of the journey was the forced march to find a village shop after we ran out of alcohol!

A mere 416 kilometres in length so Wikipedia tells us, with two monasteries mentioned and a diminishing number of fine wooden buildings, although locks are not mentioned. Again, I would guess, an area to explore in summer.

Presumably not on the BBC, which appeared to be fixated on cutting to “over inflated blondes” as one observer put it, rather than showing us the pageant.
