That looks like a crane lifting strop or similar. The only time that we have taken part in the BCN challenge was on Little Woolwich Auriga. Somewhere around Walsall we picked one up and it stopped Aurigas Lister dead - we got a tow as far as the bottom of Ryders Green locks and then spent a merry hour removing it!

I would say its more like a 'dumpy bag'.

Fouled prop?

These wonderous machines have paddle wheels and after cutting the weed an elevator chucks it on the side or back in the canal. Whoever designed them nearly got it right.

BCN Main Line. One of the longer canalling days starting at Ladywood Junction in Birmingham (0645), up Brades Locks, then down the Wolverhampton 21, AldersleyJ, AutherleyJ, then north along the Shropshire Union ...

L10283s.jpg.fde45abddf1cad02611477a85a65eff1.jpg

Norbury Junction ... (paused here 1920-2020), and an evening jaunt to a rural morning at 2150, when it was just beginning to lose the light. 14hrs5m, 26locks, 36mls. And So To Bed.

A real 'marmite' boat - Motor Yacht A anchored off Monte Carlo. I wonder what Philippe Stark would come up with if asked to design something for the English canals? Also, it wasn't just wet on the Wash that year.

On this day in 1994

Hurleston Bottom Lock Llangollen Canal

L10288s.jpg.5571f98873480e90f91a428763286c39.jpgThis lock has just been restored to full width by rebuilding one wall during 2019/2020. But for the accursed virus, a trip through with Fulbourne (7') this year would have been on the cards.

It was busy in 1994 with boats waiting in both directions. This boat came into the lock with all its fenders down, became stuck, and one of the large balloon-thinggys was burst. That attracted an audience. They retreated, raised all the fenders, returned to the lock, closed the gates and filled the lock keeping back against the bottom gates.

When they reached the top of the lock they found the three-quarters rear-corner fenders were too wide to progress past the end of the gate recesses. So we had a boat at the top of the lock, too wide to go out.

There was an appeal for screwdrivers to attack the ten screws on each fender and a large number of electric screwdrivers appeared-from-nowhere to remove said fenders (top photo). From a Black Prince hireboat "Jeeez, Hon, weeel steeel be here at nine thirty ..."

Another of those longish canalling days. From SU between br46/47 to HurlestonJ to Quoisley Lock (Llangollen). 6am to 10pm with half-hour stop for evening meal at half past seven. 15h30m travelling, 31mls, 36locks. Same trip as #1409 which was also in 1994 (mistyped the year yesterday).

How can you spend so much money to produce something so aesthetically offensive.

And I promise a more constructive contribution to this thread later today or early tomorrow.

Braunston Turn

and the unchanging approach from the Northern Oxford

What's that on the far left?

I only know it from the days when MC moved from the bottom lock to where they are now.

Ah, yes; silly me

When you're driving  - navigating a boat, you're concentrating on something else and it's amazing how one's view changes with only a couple of feed difference in height. Also in summer there's a lot more vegitation to hide those  buildings you don't want to see.....

I did a quick google-earth and saw everything in relation.

Thanks for your detail.
