Sadly not having just legged through [Dudley Tunnel], ...

The Dudley Canal trust needed to go through to collect equipment for their Christmas events and SueDay took the opportunity to organise a legging crew for which we volunteered.

"Keep going ... swap leggers if you're tired" We were and we did, before having any pictures., but this is the legging technique for minimum exhaustion

Rochdale C

I'm curious as to how registration numbers are handed out. To me this looks like a much older boat than mine (mine is 1990) yet the registration number is 49359.

Actually, no good reason other than it looks it - in as far as it has that traditional, vintage look about it. Maybe that's just how they've had it fitted out/painted.

Downriver just past Barnes Railway Bridge

in a formation as rehearsal for the Jubilee Pageant. Still only half past seven in the morning here, having set the alarm for half past four, and all locked down at Brentford for the tide. Also at a quiet time to use the full width of the river and not inconvenience early-rising paddlers.

And approaching Hammersmith Bridge still in formation  Video  MoreL1871_20120527_0170a.jpg.586bdb69655aa40dfaedef60095c3895.jpg

49359 was issued in 1990 and 52691 was issued in 1993. As a researcher of 'historic' narrow boats I can categorically assure you that PEARL BARLEY is a modern pleasure boat :captain:

Bunbury staircase SU

Always fun to shuffle three boats in the middle pound of a staircase. Odyssey (70') started in the position of the red boat, came forward while the red boat pushed across to make room for the green boat to go forward. Odyssey has now pushed across, to make space for the red boat to come forward, when we can close the gates and continue on our journeys.

AndrewDenny (of WW- see WaterwaysWorld Sept2011 p42) is viewing the building of AliceToo as a front-end (a "shunt") to convert the fifty-six foot boat Alice into seventy-foot, which can be unhitched and breasted for shorter locks. Someone will be along in a mo to say how it has progressed over the years. I'm not aware of any repeat orders though.

There are a few around now, although no idea if by the same builder.
