On this day in 2009 at about this time: half past eleven

Millennium Ribble Link. River Ribble heading towards Savick Brook. It a featureless, wide river. So the picture is typical of half-past-eleven and was taken a quarter of an hour before: it had been my turn with the water-on-the-cooling-tank for this bit of the trip. And the tide had turned by now, just to make the whole journey against-the-tide.

Douglas Marine, Millennium Ribble Link River Douglas

Yes, it was an entertaining time. Necessary too, because you can't hang about on the link. If you take too long there is insufficient water to get into the half-tidal Savick Brook.

What happened to us was even more complicated. Complexities of tides and river flow meant that we would be tight on time at best and were warned that we might be diverted into Preston overnight. (We were mustered at Tarleton for 10:45 abut not let out until 12:20) We were well back in the convoy and ended up at the tail. We called CaRT as instructed as we neared Savick Brook but were told that we were indeed to be diverted. We were not that slow but by the time we neared Preston we were last (but only just). Almost at the last moment (and seeing the mud bank hazard near the entrance) as we passed into the tidal dock we got a phone call telling us, in no uncertain tones, to get a move on. There were just moments before they would have to close the dock entrance and we would be stranded overnight on the mud. (The criticality of this timing had not been mentioned to us so by the time we were within sight of the dock we were conserving the engine a tad to minimise over heating - it was pleasant weather) Apparently we had missed calls earlier - never sure quite why, but it was 2013 and mobile coverage still not always as clever as it is now.

We made it and had a pleasant enough late afternoon and evening in July wandering around the dock and taking in the amazing history.

See http://takefiveboat.blogspot.com/2013/07/ribble-crossing.html for the fuller story! That was in our previous boat - our new one has a bit more powerful engine but we have not yet had the chance to make a return visit.

Iain's steering and organisation of tank cooling was successful. Well done and many thanks for an excellent trip! Still doesn't look all that pleased, though ?

That brings back a few memories of good times spent in Dingwall's: Albert Collins, Etta James....

I'm amazed that Jenny Wren is still operating. A friend of mine used to work on her in the early 1990s.
