Cosgrove GU. And here's hoping that groups of friends can soon return to towpath-walking together

Looks like they are practising social distancing but one in which closer is better than further! Let's hope such times return before the world population becomes extinct through prolonged isolation!

Last load of timber on the Lateral de Loire canal. From the black Forrest to La Chappell. Canal du Centre closed for lack of water in Aug that year and also lost long distance traffic from a foundry with Peugeot engine blocks.

Which year?

We were on the Latéral last year, hiring from Briare; where was he photo taken?

We did pass what appeared to be a working wharf with a péniche alongside it; there were silos there, so I'd guess either grain or cement traffic.

It was 2012. The timber was unloaded at La Chapelle and taken to a nearbye sawmill. There is still occasional grain traffic on the northern end of the lateral Loire. The canal du Centre which is the southern end of the north south route has suffered from water shortages for many years now. Not sure quite where the photo was taken, will give it some thought.

Tarleton Millennium Ribble Link River Douglas. We have locked down and it's significant wellie against the incoming tide

It was soon after that that the engine started to overheat and Peter and I spent the rest of the trip to the Ribble Link hauling  pails of water through the side hatch and throwing them over the keel cooling tank. Iain standing above steering said it was like a sauna! The deck boards had all been lifted before we set out to help keep the engine cool but it still over heated. I don't think either you or I, Peter saw much of the journey over! Thanks for the photos. They are bringing back lovely memories of our trip on Copperkins to the Lancaster

Yes, it was an entertaining time. Necessary too, because you can't hang about on the link. If you take too long there is insufficient water to get into the half-tidal Savick Brook.

And on the way back Iain rigged a brilliant (fresh-)water fine spray which worked wonders. On a later tidal trip we has an additional bilge pump that recycled bilgewater over the cooling tank, which worked quite well. Next we had extra baffles inside the cooling tank, which solved the problem ... until the cooling tank started to leak from a wholly inaccessible point underneath the Aldi boiler. So we abandoned that cooling arrangement and had an external cooling 'trombone' fitted. I had misgivings (extra hole in the hull) but it has been excellent.

Millennium Ribble Link. River Ribble from River Douglas. The skipper's guide advises against cutting the corner without rounding Astland Lamp, which nbBlueToad ahead had already done, and is now heading for Savick Brook
