Question to Tim Lewis and Tacet .

What were the rozzers looking for ?

Or were you speeding ?

The 2007 trip was a very political one as we were protesting about the lack of spending on the canals and intended to get as close to Parliament as permitted. so the police were very interested.

We were also boarded in 2006 as a random stop authorised under the Prevention Of Terrorism Act, picture of copper on board and the stop and search notice below:

Cambridge

That's got a lot going for it as an image. Light, subject, action, focal point,  beauty, (an Oxford Grad. may disagree) balance.

I still reckon you were speeding ! ?

It's the sort of vehicle that is a magnet for a pull. Like a souped up hot hatch, with dark windows and smoke wafting out of the windows. Prob crewed by an iffy looking sort too. ;)

Just a ten-minute search, it says. Did they search the front locker ? Who knows what or whom could be in there?

(No access from inside, and they would have to board there separately or walk the top plank)

The policeman took one look in the hold, baulked, then gave us the all clear

As an aside, I am reminded that the attraction of those sturdy-looking and conveniently-placed posts for single-handing out of the lock ...

Another aside: #23 was this day, too.

Thurlwood Steel Lock, T&M. Sadly, the above is the only image I have of using the lock. I'm jealous therefore of the crew of Cedar here who took a proper photo. By our next visit in 1976 it was out of use. And in photographing it, Jim dropped a lenscap, which probably unwisely he went down the ladder to retrieve.

Change of scene, not a canal but something wider.

No obvious mechanical assist, just muscle power -

I went to see that boat being built, some amazing craftmanship. There is a discreet electric motor but I am sure not being used.

On the subject of craftmanship, I would commend this  recent documentary on the restoration of Notre Dame (available for 21 days)

Gloriana has a discrete set of motors used principally as bow thrusters (!!) - as you can immagine changing direction slightly can be a bit of a challenge when there are several 'motors'.

She has visited 'our' marina several times and is a joy to behold at clse quarters. The Hasrbour Master says, quite sternly- "just look, do not touch" - else you'll stain the gold leaf....
