Question to Tim Lewis and Tacet .

What were the rozzers looking for ?

Or were you speeeding ?

When the Police boarded Copperkins on the Thames ( as in Peter Scotts photos earlier) they said they were looking for illegal immigrants and drug running. They started by saying they would interview everyone on board but changed their minds either when they heard that Iain was "one of them" or that there were 6 people on board.

More from this day in 2001

This was a relatively shortlived building at Salvage Turn (the corner by the Mailbox development (W&B)near the centre of Birmingham). It had a circular staircase without many exterior windows which opened at the top to the strange glass hat, and a good view of the canal in both directions. Towpath telegraph had that it was a centre for drug dealing, and it was completely closed for a long time. Whatever the reason, it was demolished in about 2007 at about the same time as the construction of  The Cube. If memory serves, it was constructed at the same time as The Mailbox development in about 1998.

I live in Birmingham and have often noticed this but I had not realised that it had been demolished. I'll have to pay more attention when I'm allowed out again.

On this day in 1972

Sadly, there are many ways of sinking a boat. Compared with #407 some are easily avoidable. Even worse when it's a new boat. Having seen this happen to the unfortunate Aquarius (original colourslide has it in full), I wandered across the road bridge and into the yard for another photo, and they weren't wholly welcoming ...

This brought to mind the boat hanging in #488 (last pic) where the chap with the rope at the front is clearly paying attention to what he is doing. Unlike here. The straps were very close together and the bows were turned / blown at the last moment and were lowered onto the wharf edge, the back went down and the engineroom filled with water... The current occupants of the site (Oxley Marine between Autherley and Aldersley Junctions, S&W) don't have any memory of the people or boat involved or whether the boat had a successful career in hiring thereafter. Aquarius is a popular name, and it might have been changed on the boat, if it survives. There are seven boats listed as made by "Gregory Cnl Cruisers" eg Hideaway  ...
