PRM gearbox breather

Looking on Ebay and Google, 5l Dexron 2 is about £17.99

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ATF-DII-DEXRON-2-Automatic-Transmission-Power-Steering-Fluid-Oil-5-Litre-5L/250521939447?hash=item3a54456df7:g:BQYAAOSwkYpcp3FL

It seems that Dexron 2 is not a single brand, but is a description for transmission fluid/oil.

The stuff I purchased https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTOMATIC-AUTO-GEARBOX-TRANSMISSION-FLUID-MERCEDES-ATF-DEXRON-2-FEBI08971/362163900303? seems to be same spec, but dearer, much dearer.

Correct - it is a specification. PRM say your gearbox will use ATF Dextron II or III

For instance: https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/gearbox-oil/halfords-automatic-transmission-and-power-steering-fluid-dii-1l-724930.html

Ok, been to local auto shoppe, some knowlegeable guys in there.

They checked online and on phone,  spent half an hour on this one, it seems they expected red or maybe yellow oil, anyway their stuff is sort of blue, one bottle had a red flash on label, t'other blue,  I paid under a fiver, and got a printout as the above .pdf "Use transmission fluid".

It's Getriebbeol DCTF-1

febi [manufacturer]

There is no PDF attached but is this what you bought https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/oenumber/dctf1.html

That's what I found when I said the net suggested it was ATF but the fact its blue concerned me unless there has been a universal change of colour. There are auto-boxes and auto-boxes and I can't see the gearbox on a big earth mover using the same spec oil as one on a car.

Similarly I needed some hydraulic oil for the boat steering - chandlery had the Volvo oil at £30 for one litre.

I made a note of the specification, checked online at found 5 litres (exactly the same spec) for £14 including next day P+P.

Guess which I bought.

I think you need to talk to PRM. "Gar oil" may or may not be Automatic Transmission Fluid. In fact my understanding of juts "gear oil" is that it is not ATF and I would expect the can to carry more information. ATF has  a low viscosity amongst automotive oils while "gear oil" can have the highest. I am a bit concerned that the oil you have may be for autoboxes on things like large trucks, earth movers or agricultural equipment.

Here is the page from the SAS site that lists ATF Dexron https://www.partsforallcars.com/za028246

but it seem expensive to me unless its 4 litres.

I've recently wrestled with the conundrum of what oil should be used in a PRM120 gearbox. Very long story short, I've spoken to PRM and whilst they acknowledge that original literature and recommendations stated that the same oil as used in the engine should be used (as with other PRM 'boxes) they now strongly recommended that ATF should be used in the PRM 120. I suspect for the reasons that Tony outlines. So there you have it: straight from the horse's mouth!

I spoke to Newgate this a.m., dexron 2, no quibble!

If my memory serves me correctly a PRM 120 'box takes about three quarters of a litre: https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/triple-qx-atf-dexron-ii-1-litre-522776082?gclid=Cj0KCQjw6sHzBRCbARIsAF8FMpVwq6oKu-xPN50AkpdIF2v8TNGiZbzh7nQ-Vp2rkttZlu0e8FWlrpsaAkZsEALw_wcB

Yep, I bought enuff ATF for eight years, though I may not survive 2020 .... am gobsmacked that racing is closed, it's just hell, I have run out of hobbies / diversions, would go to Marina Club, but it might be shut.
