Trent & Mersey Canal 250

Heartland

Featured Posts

We had the BCN 250 last November. Now the Trent & Mersey opened a section in March 1770 and by June 1770 had a a longer section from Haywood past Swarkestone Lock to an interchange point with the Trent so that they could advertise a traffic to Gainsborough.

Should a Trent & Mersey Canal Event be considered ?

As a supplement to the above, the actual Canal/ River Trent interchange traffic did nor begin until September 1st 1770, it seems. Construction delays might have been a factor. This interchange took place at Weston Wharf, where the canal and Trent were close together. The strip of land upon which this transfer took place still exists, although in private ownership and there are heritage buildings there. There was a warehouse and wharfingers house. Later this wharf was used to trans ship plaster into boats that went into Kings Mills for working up.
