Sorry, I don’t do irony very well. I’d probably be a Fellow of a worthy institution if I did.

I never made 'Fellow' of an 'institute', but I am a Member of a Chartered Institute (granted by Royal Charter) - The IMechE is not chartered - so maybe 'trump' the OP

It's all coming out now! If we're not careful we'll end up in a "my dad can beat your dad" contest! I'd better keep quiet about my own Associate Fellowship for the time being.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has a Royal Charter. So do the IET and the ICE. It’s just that the RICS were granted the ‘Royal’ bit of their name by the monarch.

Strong, perhaps. Erroneous, certainly.

In which case I stand corrected and apologise.

Wikipedia informed me it was a 'Professional Institute' set up by its members to represent and promote the interests of its members in their specialist field. No mention of them having the Royal Charter.

Read a bit further. And I bet it doesn’t say “institute”. That is frowned upon.

That's an interesting comment which I have not come across before.  Any idea why this is frowned upon? I belong to three organisations.  2 are Institutes. One was granted a Royal Charter and one is a learned body able to grant charter status. The third has had a Royal Charter for centuries.  Two of them are called Institutes rather than Institutions, and I have not come across anyone frowning at this, and indeed all three enjoy the respect of my profession.

If you are a member of an organisation that exists to share learning and uphold professional standards it pays not to get its name wrong.

Ah - I see what you are saying - it is an 'Institution'.

Whereas I am a member of an 'Institute'

Being unaware of the difference I asked my friend Google :

The main difference between Institute and Institution is that the Institute is a organisational body created for a certain purpose and Institution is a structure or mechanism of social order and cooperation governing the behaviour of a set of individuals within a given community.

Still not sure so looked again (not suggesting that this definition applies in this case) which suggests one is a 'building' whilst the other is the 'members'

Wonderful thing language.

institution (BUILDING) noun [C] esp. disapproving
a building where large numbers of people, esp. the old, the mentally ill or children without parents live in order to be officially taken care of
He has a horror of ending his life in an institution.

Institute (ORGANIZATION)
noun [C]
an organization which exists so that its members can do a particular, esp. educational or social, type of work.

Correct on the first point.

As for the second I fear you are too friendly with Google. It’s leading you astray.
