Comment has been made on the cost of a diagnosis by a specialist firm.  I had a problem with the PRV on my drive seemingly not operating when it was needed.  I am not familiar enough with hydraulic systems and there was no way I was going to tinker when pressures of up to 5000 psi are involved.  The ARS engineer, of course, had the proper computerised diagnostic equipment and was able to confirm that the system, though nearly thirty years old, was performing exactly as specified.  The money was worth it for peace of mind.

Hydraulic systems are usually trouble free and therefore tend to be ignored.  You need to replace the hoses at the recommended intervals and regularly change the oil and filters.

Test equipment (the black box) is inserted into the pump circuit and connected to a computer via the thin, trailing lead.
